Symptom #3 - Will not crank
Description
Possible Causes
- Open circuit between ignition switch and starter
- Transmission range switch circuit malfunction
- Transmission range switch maladjustment
- Starter malfunction
- Seized / hydro-locked engine or torque plate
- Theft-deterrent system operation
- Starter cut relay is stuck open
Diagnostic Procedure
1. Check battery condition, transmission in Park or
Neutral, theft-deterrent system, starter cut relay, and fuses. Are all
items okay?
- Yes - Go to step #2.
- No - Service as required.
2. Is a clicking sound heard from the starter when
the ignition switch is turned to START?
- Yes - Go to step #3.
- No - Go to step #4.
3. Check the starting system. Is the starting
system okay?
- Yes - Check for seized / hydro-locked engine or drive
plate.
- No - Service as required.
4. Do any electrical accessories work?
- Yes - Go to step #5.
- No - Check charging system.
5. Turn ignition to OFF, disconnect transmission
range switch and check for continuity. Is the transmission range switch
okay?
- Yes - Go to step #6
- No - Check adjustment of transmission range switch.
If the switch is adjusted properly, check for open circuit condition.
6. Rescan for DTCs. Any stored codes?
- Yes - Go to appropriate DTC test
- No - Inspect the START circuit in ignition switch or
check for open circuit between ignition switch and starter.
7. Verify test results and repair as
necessary.
Does the problem still exist?
- Yes - If malfunction remains and additional
diagnostic information is not available, replace ECU.
- No - Go to
